ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born into an artistic family in Buenos Aires,  Argentina, Laura Frank was exposed from an early age to music, art and dance and to the artisan lifestyle which she observed daily in her parents’ leather workshop.
She always knew that one day she would have a workshop of her own where she would create items that would bring others the simple satisfaction of wearing something beautiful and handcrafted.

As a high school student in Brooklyn, New York, Laura continued her interest in fine arts studying painting and drawing at the Arts Students League of New York, where she was exposed to live drawing with nudes, exploring figures and lines that have influenced her artistic work ever since.

In 1998, Laura received with honors her Bachelors of Industrial Design from the prestigious Pratt Institute. Some of her favorite classes were conceptual 3 Dimensional Design, Color Theory, Space Analysis, Furniture Design, Art History, and Sculpture.  She also traveled to Europe to study Industrial Design in Rome.

This mixture of fine arts and Industrial Design background led Laura to jewelry-making, using materials such as silver and gold with precious and semi precious stones.  In the medium of jewelry, Laura found an opportunity to further explore all she had studied while combining her love of process with her unique sense of movement, space and color, creating bold sensual lines.

In addition to crafting jewelry in her workshop, Laura went on to become co-owner of
a very successful  Brooklyn based jewelry and fine crafts gallery, N.C.H. Studio, where she operates as a buyer of jewelry and fine crafts made by other artists and sells her own pieces directly to clients. Through this experience, Laura has learned first-hand about all aspects of the wholesale jewelry business. She has also experienced the various responses that people have to her jewelry, as they absorb her unique designs.
People constantly ask Laura what her pieces represent, acknowledging various interpretations in the abstraction of her work. Laura’s pieces are physical manifestations of her unique style and they are the sum of all of her experiences – they are reflections of all she has seen, filtered through her eyes and hands- they are reflections of her personal journeys-geographic, spiritual, and artistic.

“What I love about abstraction is its boundless freedom. It allows our imagination to flow and our individuality to flourish. I like to explore this concept and bring forth this fluidity of thought into my creative process. My forms come to life with the same perception that a thought may initiate an endless chain of emotions. Emotions that may be constantly shifting; embracing our daily experiences at the same time they’re being influenced by them. I love the dialogue that is created when as viewers we question abstraction."
